Disrupting Sobriety Culture. Building Real Solutions.

The Sober Standard Charter

Reclaiming Clarity. Restoring Accountability. Reforming Culture.

At Sober Standard, we believe addiction has been normalized, commercialized, and embedded into modern culture at every level — from sport and entertainment to social media, government policy, and everyday life.

We reject the idea that dependency should be marketed as freedom.

We reject industries that profit from addiction while communities carry the consequences.

We reject performative sobriety, relapse culture, and corporate wellness campaigns that blur the reality of addiction.

We believe sobriety is not weakness, isolation, or deprivation.

Sobriety is clarity.
Sobriety is discipline.
Sobriety is accountability.
Sobriety is freedom.

Sober Standard exists to challenge the normalization of addiction, promote disciplined sobriety, and build a culture rooted in clarity, responsibility, and real human connection.

Our Action Principles

1. Personal Responsibility & Disciplined Sobriety

Real recovery begins with ownership.

We believe lasting sobriety is built through accountability, structure, discipline, purpose, and connection — not excuses, escapism, or performative identity.

Our philosophy is grounded in the principles outlined in the Sober Standard Handbook and reinforced through evidence-based recovery tools and real-world stories.

We support:

  • Accountability-led recovery
  • Purpose-driven sobriety
  • Real-world human connection
  • Physical and mental discipline
  • Long-term personal growth
  • Sober leadership and mentorship
  • Face-to-face communities and support networks
  • Sober entrepreneurship and business collaboration

We reject:

  • Victim mentality
  • Relapse normalization
  • Escapism culture
  • Performative online sobriety
  • Dependency framed as empowerment

2. Remove Addiction Marketing From Public Life

Addiction should never be sold as entertainment, identity, or aspiration.

We believe alcohol, gambling, and drug advertising have become deeply embedded in culture through sport, entertainment, retail, and digital media — particularly targeting young people.

We advocate for:

  • Removing alcohol, gambling, and drug advertising from sports
  • Ending addiction industry sponsorships in junior and community sports
  • Restricting gambling integration in sports broadcasts
  • Limiting youth exposure to addiction marketing
  • Removing manipulative lifestyle branding tied to intoxicants
  • Greater regulation of addiction advertising across digital platforms

We believe:

Sport should represent health, discipline, and community — not addiction industries.

3. Retail & Packaging Reform

Consumers deserve informed consent.

Alcohol and drug-related products should carry transparent health warnings that reflect the real risks of dependency, mental health harm, disease, and social destruction.

We advocate for:

  • Mandatory health warnings on alcohol packaging
  • Clear addiction-risk labeling
  • Graphic health warnings similar to tobacco regulations
  • Restrictions on youth-targeted branding
  • Greater transparency around substance-related harms
  • Regulation of misleading “wellness” and “healthy lifestyle” alcohol marketing

We reject:

  • Addiction disguised as lifestyle branding
  • “Healthy alcohol” narratives
  • Manipulative marketing targeting vulnerable people

4. Government Accountability

Public institutions should never rely on harmful consumption for revenue.

Governments have a responsibility to protect communities — not quietly benefit from addiction-driven industries while outsourcing the consequences to families and healthcare systems.

We advocate for:

  • Greater transparency around alcohol, gambling, and drug-related tax dependence
  • Independent oversight of addiction policy
  • Redirecting addiction-related revenue into recovery, education, and prevention
  • Reducing lobbying influence from addiction industries
  • Stronger public-health-first policy making

We believe:

Communities should never come second to industry profits.

5. Digital & Media Reform

Modern addiction culture is increasingly driven by algorithms, influencers, and online normalization.

Social media platforms have become powerful vehicles for glamorizing intoxication, gambling, and escapism — particularly among younger generations.

We advocate for:

  • Stronger restrictions on addiction-related advertising online
  • Greater transparency for paid influencer promotions
  • Reducing youth-targeted alcohol and gambling content
  • Holding platforms accountable for harmful algorithmic promotion
  • Challenging media narratives that glamorize dependency

We reject:

  • Addiction marketed as empowerment
  • Influencer-driven relapse culture
  • Online normalization of destructive behavior

6. Truth in Recovery

Recovery should be honest.

We oppose narratives that blur the reality of addiction or encourage relapse under the disguise of “balance,” “moderation,” or rebranded dependency.

We challenge:

  • “Cali sober” culture
  • Relapse normalization
  • Fake sobriety campaigns
  • Corporate recovery marketing
  • Influencer monetization of addiction identity
  • Harm-minimization messaging that ignores accountability

We believe:

People deserve truth, not marketing.

7. Protecting Children & Future Generations

Children should not grow up surrounded by addiction branding, gambling integration, or substance normalization.

We believe young people deserve environments that promote health, resilience, discipline, and real opportunity.

We advocate for:

  • Removing addiction advertising from youth spaces
  • Stronger protections against algorithmic targeting
  • Better education around addiction and mental health
  • Reducing exposure to gambling and alcohol culture
  • Creating healthier cultural role models

We believe:

Prevention begins with culture.

8. Building a Sober Future

We are not only opposing destructive systems — we are building better alternatives.

Sobriety should not mean isolation from society.
It should mean deeper connection to life.

We are committed to building:

  • Sober communities
  • Sober business networks
  • Sober events and spaces
  • Recovery education resources
  • Mentorship pathways
  • Opportunities for purpose, leadership, and growth

We believe meaningful lives are built through clarity, discipline, service, and connection.

Our Vision

We envision a future where:

  • Addiction is no longer normalized for profit
  • Young people are protected from manipulation
  • Recovery is grounded in honesty and accountability
  • Sobriety is respected, supported, and culturally visible
  • Communities value clarity over escapism
  • Human connection replaces dependency culture

This is bigger than recovery.

This is cultural reform.

This is Sober Standard.

The 8 Pillars of the Sober Standard: Building a New You, Brick by Brick

The Sober Standard isn’t just about quitting something; it’s about building a new, empowered you. It’s a framework for creating a life that resonates with your deepest values, free from the grip of addiction and negativity. Here are the 8 pillars that form the foundation of this transformation:

1. Self-Ownership: You are the captain of your ship. This pillar emphasizes taking responsibility for your choices, goals, and well-being. It’s about understanding your triggers, strengths, and values to chart your own course towards a fulfilling life.

2. Clarity of Purpose: Know where you’re headed. This pillar encourages identifying your core values and desires. What truly matters to you? What kind of life do you yearn for? By defining your “why,” you gain clarity and direction for your journey.

3. Actionable Steps: Small steps lead to big changes. This pillar focuses on taking practical, achievable actions that align with your goals. It’s about diving into exercises, prompts, and hacks that move you forward, one step at a time.

4. Self-Compassion & Nurturing: Be kind to yourself. This pillar emphasizes self-care and inner strength. It’s about treating yourself with kindness, celebrating progress (big or small), and acknowledging setbacks as learning opportunities.

5. Personal Pacing & Growth: Your journey, your timeline. This pillar encourages honoring your unique journey. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Celebrate your progress, adapt the path as needed, and trust the unfolding of your growth.

6. Building Sustainable Habits: Make it a way of life. This pillar emphasizes integrating positive changes into your daily routine. Create healthy habits, build supportive environments, and focus on lasting transformation, not just temporary fixes.

7. Empowering Community: You’re not alone. This pillar highlights the importance of connection and support. Surround yourself with positive influences, seek guidance from trusted sources, and connect with communities that uplift and inspire you.

8. Continuous Learning & Reflection: Growth is a lifelong journey. This pillar emphasizes curiosity and self-discovery. Regularly reflect on your progress, seek new knowledge, and embrace continuous learning to evolve and refine your Sober Standard.

Remember, these pillars are not rigid rules but guiding principles. Adapt them to your unique needs and preferences. The key is to build a Sober Standard that resonates deeply with you, empowering you to create a life of clarity, fulfillment, and lasting joy.

I live in Vienna Austria. We do not have Smart Recovery or you here.
What books do you have or sell in German?
I am VERY educated in both Smart Recovery and REBT, as well as CBT and Feeling Good by David Burns.
I already go to 2 groups, but the therapist is not a solid REBT/CBT beliefer. I am interested in starting a group here. I am interested in books in German.
